SMAANZ offers numerous networking and development opportunities for HDR (higher degree by research) students throughout the year.
Annual HDR Workshop
This workshop takes place at the annual SMAANZ Conference and is usually hosted the day before the conference starts in the host city. This workshop includes a variety of development sessions, delivered by senior academics in the SMAANZ community (e.g. publication advice sessions, academic career advice). This workshop is free for all SMAANZ HDR students attending the annual conference, but pre-registration with the SMAANZ Student Representative is essential.
HDR Mid-Year Conference
This one day conference occurs in July each year and is an opportunity for HDR students to present their work in a friendly environment and receive constructive peer and academic feedback. The conference is free to SMAANZ HDR members and is also available to non-SMAANZ HDR members (for a fee of $40, which also includes annual SMAANZ student membership).
SMAANZ will again be running a one-day HDR Conference Monday 15th of July at Southern Cross University on the Gold Coast. The day will consist of student presentations and a panel session by senior academics. Once again, the conference will be co-hosted with CAUTHE, so there will be plenty of opportunities to meet and chat with academics and students from a variety of disciplines.
Students will each give a 10-minute presentation, and then receive constructive feedback from academics and their fellow students. This presentation could be a practice for the SMAANZ Conference in November, a journal article/thesis chapter, or if you’re in the early stages of a Masters/PhD you could present your proposed project. This is an opportunity to develop your presentation skills in a friendly and welcoming environment, and to get feedback from. Please complete the attached Presentation Proposal form, and return to Olivia (email@example.com) by 15th May 2019.
Current Student Members of SMAANZ (as of March 31st 2019), are eligible to apply for a bursary to assist with attending the HDR Conference. For Australian (interstate) students bursaries are available for up to $250, and for New Zealand students bursaries are available for up to $500 to cover flights and accommodation costs. Please fill in a Bursary Application form and return by 15th May 2019 if you wish to be considered for the bursary program.
Webinars are held throughout the year, providing an opportunity for HDR students to briefly present an issue/problem they’re having with their research and ask advice from their peers.
The sessions consist of a presentation/Q&A session with an academic from the wider SMAANZ community.
Stay tuned for the next SMAANZ HDR Webinar!
