We understand that individuals within the SMAANZ community seek opportunities to grow and develop in their academic careers. Effective mentoring can lead to increased confidence, productivity and success in a mentee while also enhancing career satisfaction of both mentors and mentees (Straus & Sacket, 2014). To address this need, in 2017 SMAANZ launched a mentor program that is exclusively available to SMAANZ members.
The SMAANZ Mentor Program is designed to promote scholarly enquiry, teaching expertise and leadership in the sport management academic careers. It assists SMAANZ members in their career development through the provision of formal mentoring relationships. Members can sign up to become a mentor or mentee and the SMAANZ Mentor Program Coordinator will match mentors with mentees twice each year (February and August):
Mentors can select from the following options:
- Mentors for HDR students
- Mentors for early career academics
- Mentors for mid-career academics
- Mentors for experienced academics
Mentees can select from the following options:
- Early Career Academic
- Mid-Career Academic
- Experienced Academic
Members can also sign up to be both a mentor and mentee if they wish. This could be appropriate for someone who might wish to mentor a more junior member of the SMAANZ community and also be mentored by someone more senior than they are.
The program is already underway and we have matched the first group of mentors and mentees. You can enter an expression of interest to participate at any time and the next matching round will take place in early August.
We hope you consider taking part in this program. See the mentor program page for more information: http://smaanz.org/mentor-program/
