Description of Responsibilities of and Resources Call for Applications
Jio Institute is a philanthropic initiative supported by Reliance Industries (a Fortune Global 500 Company). Jio Institute envisages to be a multi-disciplinary, research focused higher education institution with global repute and play a pivotal role to leapfrog India’s growth in higher education. Jio Institute has been awarded a Letter of Intent to be set up as a Greenfield Institution of Eminence, under UGC (Institution of Eminence Deemed to be University) Regulations 2017, Ministry of Education, Government of India.
Jio Institute aspires to prepare the next generation of leaders by setting a new benchmark as an exemplary, internationally reputed academic institution that promotes research, innovation and entrepreneurship. The Institute’s Governing Council includes eminent persons from academia, industry, policy think tanks and the social sector. It is advised by a Global Advisory Council of globally renowned University Presidents (Emeritus and present) and scholars providing direction for programme development, research, innovation and entrepreneurship.
Jio Institute is initiating two post-graduate programs in 2022 in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and Digital Media and Marketing Communications. The third program in Sport Business Management is targeted to launch in 2023. All programs will incorporate cutting-edge research-based curriculums and innovative pedagogy. The programmes will be comprised of hands-on learning through projects and an overseas exchange module at partner institutions initially located in the United States, Canada and Singapore. Jio Institute’s state of the art campus at Ulwe, Navi Mumbai comprises of academic, research, sport and recreational facilities.
The Chair of the Sport Graduate Program will work with the graduate faculty, and the Graduate School to develop graduate curricula and courses, recruit and develop faculty, recruit and facilitate the admission of graduate students, manage graduate internships, mentor graduate students and assist in their placement. They may also develop and manage the budget for the academic unit’s graduate program.
The position Chair (Throughout this document will refer to this position as Chair) is central to the success of that graduate program. This document outlines the general responsibilities and duties of a Chair and addresses the resources that should accompany these responsibilities. The Chair reports to Vice Chancellor/Provost. The Chair coordinates these efforts:
Administrative Responsibilities for Chair
Program Curriculum and Courses
- Work with the Program Mentor, Dr. William A. Sutton (retired sports executive and Professor Emeritus at the University of South Florida) and the graduate faculty to develop curriculum and courses
- The integration of developing technologies will be essential in developing the curriculum which will be future focused utilizing current sport industry events and practices, in order to forecast new opportunities and developments in India as well as globally.
- The curriculum should address the art of sport business (marketing, creating content and social media, etc.) and the science of sport business (business intelligence, analytics, and data sciences)
- Stay abreast of developments in the discipline, both in India and globally and guide the program accordingl
- Enhance program by monitoring and improving applicant quality, time to degree, annual number of graduates, etc
- Develop a Graduate Students Handbook, and update Graduate handbook annually
- Maintain Graduate Catalog materials as pertains to program
- Oversee the development and monitor program’s web sit
- Recruit and Develop Faculty
- Based upon the program curriculum, determine the composition of the desired faculty in terms of fulltime, adjuncts and visiting professors
- Recruit nationally and internationally to fill these opportunitie
- Onboard the new faculty and familiarize them with not only the program content and goals but the overall philosophy and mission of Jio Institute
- Schedule faculty to cover both the required and elective courses to provid for timely student graduations
- Evaluate faculty annually
Review of applications
- Review completed applications with university and departmental admissions committee
- Identify and utilize supplemental scholarship funds available for strong applicants
- Oversee the maintenance of all program graduate student records
- Facilitate arrival of matriculating students by providing program orientation (virtual and on-site)
- Management of Graduate Assistants (if applicable)
- Assign duties to graduate assistants
- Assure that graduate assistants are adequately trained to fulfill their assignments
- Assess work performance of graduate assistants based of faculty/industry mentor feedback
Mentoring
- Plan Orientation and on-boarding activities for entering students
- Coordinate orientation (both academic and social) for incoming students
- Serve as advisor (academic, procedural, career) and assign other faculty to advising roles depending upon expertise and student career focus
- Oversee administering of qualifying exams, oral exams, internship and practicum exams
- Administrate and supervise graduate student field projects
- Serve as advocate of graduate students, individually and collectively within program, assuring fairness of treatment; involves interaction with programs representative to the Graduate Student Association
- Responsible for discipline/sanctioning of graduate students
- Develop individualized post-graduate placement plans for each student
- Assist with identifying employment opportunities and assisting graduates to secure employment
Budgetary
- Develop and submit stipend and tuition budget to department and Graduate School or appropriate funding unit
- Manage program budget
- Identify and secure external funding opportunities for program suppor
- External Administrative Responsibilities of Chair Marketing and Promotional Responsibilities
- Coordinate all program marketing and promotions initiatives with university centralized marketing and promotion teams to maximize impact and reduce chance of duplication
- Promote the program nationally and globally through speaking, writing and social media activitie
- Establish a relationship with Sport Business International (SBI) to promote the program and begin the rankings process (graduate program would be eligible for international rankings after 5 years)
Develop an International Internship Program
- Work in conjunction with the Program Mentor to develop international internship placement programs initially in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom and expand to Asia and Australia
- Oversee internship placemen
- Administrate and supervise graduate student field projects
- Explore and Enhance International opportunities in Asia and Australia
- Leverage international placement opportunities to recruit international student
- Develop an International Faculty Exchange Program
- Work in conjunction with the Program Mentor to develop international faculty exchange programs in the United States, Canada, Singapore, and the United Kingdom
- Facilitate International Faculty exchange opportunities in Asia and Australia
- Develop a Virtual Conference to increase visibility of International Faculty Exchange program
- Host an international sport business conference (after the campus has been completed and is fully operational) to highlight the program and development awareness and interest among international colleagues
Recruitment
- Oversee the development and distribution of recruiting materials
- Develop and implement a national and international recruiting strateg
- Attract and identify candidates via appropriate sources.
- Identify appropriate conferences to recruit applicants
- Speak to groups of prospects
- Respond to inquiries from prospective applicants
- Follow-up, nurturing of prospects via mail, phone, sponsor campus visit (recruitment weekends, etc.)
Other Responsibilities
- Support any other activities appropriate for enhancing the graduate program
- Join and be actively involved in Sport Business related academic organizations throughout the world
Resources for Program Chair
In order to attract and retain capable faculty who will pursue the above responsibilities enthusiastically, certain resources must be provided. The level of resources made available to the Chair should be appropriate for the size, complexity and scope of the graduate program.
Resources for service as Chair may include the following:
- Travel budget to support international recruiting and placement projects
- Marketing and promotional budget – 3-year commitment
- Program assistant to process correspondence, forms, manage files, etc.
Appointment and Compensation
The Chair will be contractually appointed for a period of 3 or 5 years (Jio Decision) Compensation commensurate with experience.
