SMAANZ Awards & Grants - 2024 Winners

We are delighted to share that SMAANZ received a record number of submissions for the 2024 Awards & Grants. It’s fantastic to see the enthusiasm and dedication from our community, and we truly appreciate the time and effort everyone put into preparing their materials.

On behalf of the SMAANZ Board, we’re pleased to announce this year’s award and grant recipients.  We look forward to celebrating their contributions at the annual conference dinner at Deakin University, Geelong in December. A special thanks goes out to our judges, reviewers, and Prof. Kevin Filo for their time and effort in the review process.

SMAANZ Best Conference Paper Award
Winner: Dr. Kirstin Hallmann (German Sport University Cologne): “From Dutiful Volunteers to Volunteer Devotees and Involvement Seekers

This paper segments volunteer board members, coaches, and referees within voluntary sports clubs, providing new insights into their varied motivations and distinct volunteer personas. The findings offer valuable guidance for recruitment strategies across volunteer roles.

Industry Engagement Award Grant
Winners: Dr. Paul Bowell & Dr. Katherine Raw (Swinburne University): “Enhancing Semi-Professional Women Basketballers’ Experiences in Elite Sport”

This Industry Engagement project aims to explores the holistic experience of semi-professional women athletes in the Southside Flyers (WNBL), examining how elements like performance management and organisational support impact their well-being and career balance. The insights aim to shape improved practices for athlete support and development.

SMAANZ Three-Minute-Thesis
Finalists: We’re also pleased to announce the 2024 SMAANZ Three-Minute Thesis (3MT) finalists: Mohsen Loghmani (Griffith University)Melanie Schwimmer (Otago University), and Sanghyeon Kim (Swinburne University). Don’t miss their live presentations on December 5 at Deakin University, Geelong, with the winner to be announced at the closing dinner on December 6 at GMHBA Stadium.

SMAANZ Research Fellows

Recipients: Earlier in the year we proudly announced the inaugural cohort of SMAANZ Research Fellows. We look forward to formally recognising and awarding these recipients at the closing dinner in Geelong.

Student Travel Assistance Grant

Recipients: The SMAANZ Travel Assistance program aims to support students in participating in the student workshop, an integral component of the annual SMAANZ conference. Scheduled for December 3rd, the workshop will be organised by our SMAANZ HDR Representative, Ellie Faulkner.  HDR students still have the opportunity to apply for the travel grant.
